“Warehouse Junkies” Record Show @ CUAS Gallery

The depth of Chicagoland’s musical heritage may often be unfathomable –labels like Cadet, Delmark, Dust Traxx, and dozens more all call Chicago ‘home’– but the global cultural impact of our city’s music scene is anything but deniable. With Chicago Urban Art Society and Ground Lift Media’s new bi-monthly Record Show “Warehouse Junkies,” we whole-heartedly celebrate and embrace Chicago’s rich musical lineage, and bring together a group of individuals in a pursuit of music and buying, selling and trading.

“Warehouse Junkies” isn’t your typical Record Show.

Using their gallery to its fullest, Chicago Urban Art Society will repurpose their space as the official “Warehouse Junkies” venue. In this non-traditional environment, vendors will consist of Chicago-based music retailers as well as local independent dealers, collectors, and DJs. Customers are invited to shop – buy/trade – rare, valuable and classic merchandise while local DJs talents provide the soundtrack.

‘Ancient Astronauts Invade Chicago 2010′ Mix!

'Ancient Astronauts Invade Chicago 2010' Mix

Essentially, this promo mix release is one bigger track made up of four mini mix-installments or Visits influenced by the German DJ/production duo, Ancient Astronauts (ESL Music/Switchstance Recordings).  The two gents, Kabanjak and Dogu, use different styles and work them into a grand allure that’s become their trademark sound, recognized by music communities internationally. Four of Chicago’s favorite DJs each composed a 20-minute mix that takes Ancient Astronauts’ notable approach and slight-twists it into a stirring sonic presentation. Each installment contains bass and beats that blubber and punctuate steady syncopation and cadence, while incorporating sounds that normally never meet.  Check out the mix-tetralogy here! DJ John Simmons, DJ Trew, DJ Newlife, and DJ Intel open for Ancient Astronauts.  Ground Lift Media, Redlight Productions, and The Dirty Social present a Pre-Lollapalooza event on August 5, 2010 at the Darkroom (2210 W Chicago Ave, Chicago IL)  More information on their live performance can be found at http://www.groundliftmedia.com or http://www.darkroombar.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Forming in 2001 in Durham, North Carolina, LITTLE BROTHER is the pair of emcees Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh and , first appearing on the hip-hop scene with their 2003 ABB Records release, The Listening.  The album immediately struck a chord with the rap community, garnering praise from the likes of Pete Rock and The Roots, as well as catching the ears of Jay-Z, who recruited producer 9th Wonder for some production work of his own.
The Minstrel Show LP followed as a darkly humorous album that is equal parts soul and satire, presenting a fictional television network, UBN (U Black N*****s).  As emcee Phonte explains, “As rappers, we have to take responsibility for what we say…If not, we’re doing essentially what minstrel shows did: perpetuating negative images and reinforcing those negative stereotypes.”  The second album was highly acclaimed by both critics and fans as both a bold statement on the current hip hop climate, and also as a masterpiece catapulting Little Brother into underground prominence.
After inner strife which usually follows success that shines as brightly as Little Brother’s, the long-awaited final album is here.  The laid-back yet infectious first single off the album, “Curtain Call,” says it all.  Phonte explains why the long wait, “I didn’t want our last record to be a bunch of second-rate material, I wanted to walk away from Little Brother knowing that I gave our fans all that I had to give, and said everything I wanted to say. With LeftBack, I’ve done that.”

1773 have been a part of every Blu concert here in Chicago for the past 2 years, and this weekend at the 2nd installment of the ‘Bring That Beat Back’ concert series was no different.

The song, “Makin’ Moves” is produced by Tall Black Guy and features MC/Producer 14kt of the Athletic Mic League (on wax, not at this show unfortunately!).  Sherron Shabbazz, the Hip Hop Examiner over at examiner.com, captured the fellas as they injected their energy into an already buzzing sellout crowd at one of Chicago’s premier live music venues, Subterranean.  Check out the video above for more…

Qwel & Maker Interview with The Examiner (courtesy of Sherron Shabazz)

Qwel & Maker Interview w/ The Examiner (courtesy of Sherron Shabazz)

In the fall of 2009 Qwel and Maker released the follow up to their 2004 CD The Harvest, So Be It. So Be It is raw Hip-Hop at its best. Qwel spits introspective lyrics without lacking flow while Maker provides the sound. Both men have various side projects that are dope but together they fit like hand-in-glove.

I spoke with Qwel and Maker about So Be It, their various side projects, and their February 13th show in Chicago with Mos Def and MF Doom.

VIEW ORIGINAL INTERVIEW HERE (via examiner.com)

SS: Qwel, explain to the readers of Examiner.com what the Four Season Series is.

Qwel: At the time of the Four Seasons conception I wanted to do something challenging for myself. I also wanted to try out projects with one producer throughout. I figured that way the albums would be more coherent, not only sound-scape wise, but would transition topics from track to track. In some ways I feel I achieved this, but in some ways I fell short by my own standard. I also chose to take up the occasion to describe current events through the biblical descriptions of the four horsemen accordingly. I wanted to record the change in my life at a critical time in human history as well. Life changes like the seasons.
